Today I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Webb, who drove all the way from Connecticut just to buy one of my paintings. Mary chose to buy the painting "Red, Orange, Yellow" and I was so happy to be able to meet her and give the painting to her in person. I am always happily surprised when someone wants to buy my work but to have someone drive so far just to pick a painting up in person is quite humbling. It was wonderful meeting and talking with you Mary. Thank you so much and enjoy! :)

Art in the Round Barn opens with a meet-the-artists reception on September 20th

The 19th annual Art in the Round Barn exhibit opens on Sunday, September 20, with a gala reception at the Joslyn Round Barn on East Warren Road in Waitsfield, from 4 to 7 p.m., catered by Cooking from the Heart. This is an opportunity to meet many of the artists who are included in the show and to discuss with them their choices of subject matter and technique. Art in the Round Barn is a juried show with 40 artists chosen from a pool of applicants. Local artists are well represented in the show including Marilyn Ruseckas, Jennifer Perellie, Candy Barr, David and Melanie Leppla, and Mireille Clapp. Local artist John Matusz, known in the area for his sculptures, is exhibiting his charcoal drawings for the first time this year at the show. Other New England artists are also well represented with artists from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island. Several favorite Vermont artists are returning to the show this year. Bonnie Acker's landscapes done in pastel, Elizabeth Allen's oils and Helen Shulman's abstract paintings will be on display. Ripton artist Sandra Lance's works in porcelain will be shown for the first time, including lamps, a bowl and a very original chess set. Those attending the Art in the Round Barn show are invited to stroll the grounds of the Inn to visit the many outdoor sculptures that are placed around the property. Kim Hopper, who is coordinating the show along with Anne Marie DeFreest, says, "We have a great mix this year of favorite artists who are returning to the show and newcomers whose work has not been seen locally." This year's jurors were Tari Swenson from the West Branch Gallery in Stowe, Lori Klein from the Artisans' Gallery in Waitsfield and Mark Elliot, a local artist. Art in the Round Barn is sponsored by the Green Mountain Cultural Center in collaboration with the Inn at the Round Barn Farm. Tickets for the reception may be purchased at the door. The show opens to the public on Monday, September 21, and runs through October 12. Admission is free, but a donation is suggested to help cover the costs of organizing the show. Walking into The Starving Artist to interview artist Jennifer Perellie, I wasn’t sure what to expect. This, according to Jennifer, is a common dilemma. She says that people don’t seem to be able to match her look to her art. “I’m young, I have some pink hair but my work is in a fine art gallery and it’s happy and cheery!” Jennifer laughs. My reaction, however, was shocked. She may claim that her “happy and cheery” art doesn’t match her, but Jennifer is immediately relatable, funny, and, well, “happy and cheery.” The quote that hangs behind her in the store reads, “I used to be an artist, but I couldn’t handle the starving part.” I laugh, wondering how anyone could miss her cheery sense of humor hanging right in front of them. And, as for not matching her look to one of a fine artist, Jennifer is wrong. She is, more than anything, an artist to her core. She has always been an artist. “I’ve always wanted to be an artist,” she says. “When I was a little kid I wanted to be an artist. My best memories are coloring. I remember coloring Cinderella and all the princesses. I had all the Disney coloring books…I loved it. I always remember doing some kind of art and loving it.” She never lost her love for it. She still hasn’t, but success hasn’t changed her. She remains humble, telling me, “I was always good at it, also. She laughs and hesitates, adding, “I guess.” Fortunately for Jennifer, she guessed right. She finally put four paintings up in the Red Barn art show in 2004 and “took the leap.” She was nervous, but sold a painting the first day of the show. “It was really hard for me to give the painting up,” she remembers. Although she admits that it is now easier to let her paintings go, she still misses a few, such as her favorite piece titled Look At The Sky. “It was the first time I had used horizontal tissue paper,” she recalls about Look At The Sky. As she talks about the piece, she describes a big red poppy that “your eye follows all the way through.” She smiles, envisioning the painting and I realize how much she does match her art. The happiness she emanates is the same feeling that comes from art like the piece she is thinking about. It makes sense, however, that her pieces bring out such emotion as she is inspired by people. “I consider all of my flowers to be groups of people. I wish I could paint people better. I used to consider myself a watercolor portrait artist.” Her titles are clues to the groups of people that inspire each painting. She brings up a picture of one of her paintings. “I was missing being in college and I did this one. It’s called community gathering.” Then, she picks out another. “This one is of me and my friends. It is called Sense of Place. I did it right after I graduated, because I felt like I was in my sense of place after that.” Finally, she picks out one painted after she became a partner at the Artisans’ Gallery. She describes having constant meetings and calling one another all the time, and shows me Talking Amongst Eachother, a painting inspired by those interactions. Jennifer describes her artistic style as “always evolving.” What is most wonderful about the evolution of her art, however, is that sometimes is comes unexpectedly. When she first went back to doing her art after a lapse, she went back because she had the option to paint a picture instead of write a paper for a college project. When she began to add mixed media such as tissue paper to her watercolors, it was because she found out that tissue paper was a technique used by Eric Carle. Carle was an artist she had been reading much of due to a nanny-ing job at the time. As far as Jennifer’s creative process goes, she deems music one of the most important parts. “I have to listen to music,” she says, “Usually, when I am getting ready for a show I listen to the same CD over and over again for one show. Last year all I did was listen to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. I also like Fleetwood Mac and The Band.” The most important thing to know about her, however, is not how she paints or what she paints, but what she believes about her art. She answers that question, “I don’t take it seriously. I don’t understand why people have to try and live off of their art to be a successful artist. Selling a painting for me doesn’t make me successful.” For Jennifer, the work is more about having fun. “The subject isn’t serious, it’s fun. It just makes people happy.” Finally, Jennifer gets to what she believes is the best part about her art. “The best thing ever,” she says, “is that I am in shows with artists that I grew up in awe of, like Marilyn Ruseckas.” (Ruseckas is Perellie’s favorite local artist). “I’ve connected more with my community through my art. My work is hanging on the same walls as all of them. The Vermont Festival of the Arts is fast approaching and this year I am busier than ever. I will be showing four new pieces at The Big Red Barn Art Show located at Lareau Farm, right off of Route 100 in Waitsfield. This is one of the biggest events of the festival and one not to be missed! The reception is August 2nd 5-7 pm and is tons of fun! I will also have one new piece at Artisans’ Gallery (along with my other current work) for the Vermont Pastel Society Show. This is my first show with the Vermont Pastel Society and our first time hosting them at the gallery. I have personally been working with the Vermont Pastel Society in organizing this show and will actually be hanging it myself! The reception is August, 8th 4-6pm. Artisans’ Gallery is located on Bridge street in Waitsfield. I’m very excited for this one! There’s more! I will also be taking part in A Passport to Open Studios weekend August 8th-9th at my store The Starving Artist, located in Village Square right off of Route 100 in Waitsfield. This is an opportunity for you to watch my painting process and ask any questions you want. During this time I will be working on new work for the 19th annual Art in the Round Barn Show that will be open September 21st - October 12th with an amazing reception September 20th 4-7pm. My Unique Three Step Painting Process

Since so many of you are interested in the process of how I create my paintings, I thought I would post a little explanation:) First I begin a basic drawing and watercolor painting. Starting out as a water colorist, this simply helps me to organize my thoughts onto paper. For example, what colors I want to use and the composition of the painting. All of my mixed media paintings are done on cold press Arches watercolor paper. ~ I then add the tissue paper with an artists glue. I always rip the tissue paper rather than cut it as I think it adds more of an organic feel. The tissue paper not only adds texture to the painting, it also adds a balance of color and helps in rounding out the composition of each piece. With all of my paintings, the tissue paper is added over the flower stems, placed as grass and sprinkled through-out the painting. At this point I feel the painting starts to come into its own. ~ The last step is applying the pastel. I feel that this is the most important step as the pastel really brings a vibrancy and texture that any other medium could not do. For me, this is where the fun begins. Pastel is very forgiving and believe it or not light colors completely cover dark colors (the opposite of watercolor) so I can play around and have lots of fun. I usually start by painting over the tissue paper grass which tends to be a mixture of three to four colors. I then paint the flowers, rarely mixing more than three colors per flower. Next is the back ground and sprinkled pieces of tissue paper. The back ground is always a guess for me as to how it will turn out. I've mixed anywhere from two to ten different colors in a back ground before while painting the sprinkled pieces of tissue paper at the same time. Overall, I really never know how a painting is going to turn out. They do tend to take on a life of their own and often I have no idea how I got from the vision I had in my head to what the final piece looks like. However, the example I show here looks very much like how I had intended it to be. Well, that's my unique three step painting process. If you have any questions feel free to email me!

With spring right around the corner I’ve been preparing to clean out my studio and dust off my easel. I’ve been so busy with my store this winter that I’ve barely had time to paint, although I have to say it was a much needed hiatus. Last year with the opening of the store, classes and the gallery it was quite difficult to get ready for shows. But this year I have a better sense of how to manage my time and can’t wait to get painting again. I would like to thank everyone who has stopped by my store and the gallery to meet me and look at my work. I so appreciate your kind words and enthusiasm about my work. It really does encourage me to see what else I can accomplish with my art. Thank you!

Art in the Round Barn opens with Gala Reception

The 18th annual Art in the Round Barn exhibit opened on Sunday, September 21, with a reception where artists mingled with the public to answer questions about their work. The 40 artists represented in the juried show come mainly from Vermont and neighboring states, with several newcomers to the exhibit this year. As viewers enter the show, they are treated to the works of Andrew Woodward, a Boston painter who is exhibiting at the Round Barn for the first time. His painting "Early Signs of Spring" explores in his words "the spontaneous movements of birds and trees before a muted New York City skyscraper's stoic presence." His other paintings on display also feature trees and birds. Another first-time exhibitor is Norton Latourelle from Shoreham, Vermont. His woodcarvings of native Vermont animals are done with a great appreciation for his subjects and delight young and old alike, especially a life-sized coyote called "Songdog." He writes, "The Round Barn show beckons for rural themes and in that vein these commonplace animals loom big around agricultural Vermont and are due notice and tolerance from us." Merill Comeau's "fabric paintings" use recycled clothing from family members and second-hand shops. She takes traditional "women's work" techniques and adds other materials to create a "worm's-eye view" of the natural world. The hangings are colorful and varied. Many favorite artists from past Round Barn shows are also exhibiting this year including Bonnie Acker, Julie Baker Albright, Annalein Beukenkamp, Sean Callahan, Jennifer Perellie, Lucy Petrie and Marilyn Ruseckas. The show is sponsored by the Green Mountain Cultural Center in collaboration with the Inn at the Round Barn Farm and runs through October 13. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except on October 4 and 11 when it closes at 2:30 for private events. On Sunday, September 28, the show closes at noon. Today was the last day of the Vermont Festival of the Arts in the Mad River Valley. I can’t believe the month as flown by so fast! It’s always so nice this time of year to reconnect with other area artists and I always feel so lucky to be apart of this community. Through-out the festival I sold six paintings, one commission and lots and lots of cards. I am so thankful to everyone who came up to me to let me know how much they love my work. It really does mean a lot and helps me to keep going with my now very busy schedule. See you next year!

Artists of the Mad River Valley Show

The Vermont Arts Council is hosting a show entitled "Artists of the Mad River Valley” at their gallery on State Street in Montpelier. Sixteen Mad River Valley artists are represented in the show which is a sampling of the Vermont Festival of the Arts. The show is one of the outreached ventures sponsored by the festival to promote the yearly event outside the Mad River Valley. “Artists of the Mad River Valley” is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9am-4:30pm at the Vermont Arts Council, 136 State Street in Montpelier. This was the “State of the Arts” edition and has an extensive article featuring galleries through-out Vermont. There is also a write-up on Artisans’ Gallery mentioning me and the other three women who run the gallery: Lori Klein, Peggy Potter and Nancy Burroughs. I have to say this is a dream of mine come true. Just four years ago I can remember reading through Vermont Magazine in my living room and seeing the Artisans’ Gallery add thinking some day that could be me. This past summer while sitting for the Big Red Barn Art Show I noticed a woman carrying some of my cards while walking around the exhibit so I thought I would introduce myself. Her name was Nancy Mobley and while speaking to her I learned that she had seen my work before and liked it so much that she had decided to paint her own version of one of my paintings “Thee Red Poppies” I was so flattered by this that I asked Nancy to email me a photo of her painting which she did. Last week I ran into Nancy again while I was working at the Artisans’ Gallery and I asked for permission to post the photo of her painting along with anything she would like to say. Nancy graciously agreed. Thank you Nancy! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you sharing this with me. I love your version of the painting and look forward to seeing more of your work. Art's Alive and Art Map Burlington's FIRST 50 Exhibition

I will have a painting at the 2008 edition of First Fifty that will be held at the Art's Alive Gallery at Union Station in Burlington. The exhibition runs February 1st-29th. This Burlington tradition is an open exhibition of work by the first fifty artists drawn by lottery. The annual event brings in a variety of art by local artists and is a truly democratic exhibition of the people. There will be a reception February 1st from 5-8pm during the First Friday Art Walk. The 17th Annual Art in the Round Barn Juried Exhibition ended today after three great weeks. The historic round barn is a beautiful place to visit, especially at this time of year with the leaves changing and all the wonderful art to view. So if you weren't able to make it to the show this year hopefully you can next year. The jurors of the show were, Stephanie Walker Kramer-Chase Gallery, Boston, Mass, Tari Swenson- owner of West Branch Gallery, Stowe, VT and Zola Solamente-Director of Arden Gallery, Boston Mass. The reception was great. It's always nice meeting people who like my work and it's great seeing artists who I admire. Sometimes I still cant believe that I've been in shows with artists such as Marilyn Ruseckas and Bill Brauer. Two exceptional artist that I admired long before I ever entered a show. Every year the reception is catered by Cooking from the Heart so the food is always amazing and overall it was a very nice evening. I had five new pieces in the show. "Community Gathering", "Look at the Sky!", "Dream State", "Celebrate!" and "Talking Amongst Each Other". My work was hung at the entrance of the show which was a very nice surprise. "Community Gathering" and "Look at the Sky!" are the biggest paintings I have done to date and two of the paintings "Look at the sky" and "Dream State" have a new element to them, horizontally laid tissue paper! I have to say that I really like how they all turned out. Yes, I am the worst critic of my work but I really can't complain about any of these:)

A big thank you to Jessica Lynn who bought four of my paintings Monday. I have to admit that even though I want my paintings to sell it was hard to see so many of them go at once. The Big Red Barn Art Show ended today after a month as part of the Vermont Festival of the Arts held in the Mad River Valley for the month of August. The show is one of the festivals main attractions, this year receiving well over two-thousand visitors! An amazing turn out and the best to date. I had four newly framed pieces hanging in the show. "Liberated", "Party Poppies", "Red, Orange, Yellow" and "Little Red Poppies". I also had a rack of original matted works as well as a card display. My cards almost sold out twice and I sold three matted pieces and one framed painting at the show. Overall, through-out the month long festival I sold ten original mixed media paintings! WOW! I want to thank everyone again who supported me by going to the Red Barn Art Show, stopping by my Open Space Studio, the Artist Attic event and those who participated in the Art in the Garden tour. Overall, it's been a very busy and rewarding month for me as an artist. I look forward to next years Festival of the Arts with some new ideas in mind and hope that you will all be able to come back to the festival next year! A big Thank You to everyone who purchased cards and paintings. You have all helped me to be able to continue my painting journey. THANK YOU:)

Open Spaces Weekend!

August 11th and 12th was Artist Open Spaces Weekend in the Mad River Valley as part of the Vermont Fesival of the Arts. Some area artists opened their studios to the public while others set up demonstrations in various local spots. My Open Space spot was at my family's restaurant, Perellie's Pizzeria. I set my easel up by the pond and brought a few pieces of work that were in various stages of completion so everyone could see the process of creating with three mediums. My Niece and assistant for the weekend Lizzie, got a lesson in covering the whole page with paint as she began a landscape of the pond. Overall, the weekend turned out to be great! The weather was beautiful and it was so nice to meet admirers of my work. Over the weekend I finished the two paintings I started for the Art in the Garden Tour and began another which I plan to finish for the Art in the Round Barn Exhibit in September. I'd like to Thank everyone who stoped by to see my Open Space. Thank you:)
